Pros

  • It continues to the expansive and fascinating story of the Five Nights universe.
  • The new security system works extremely well and is an improvement over the previous two games.
  • Tweaks to the game, including animatronics that can hinder your progress without killing you, were largely praised as a welcome addition to the franchise's successful formula.
  • Two endings make it feel as if your actions truly matter and encourage players to further explore the game's lore and systems.

Cons

  • Jumpscares and evil animatronics feel a bit tired as the game goes on.

Five Nights at Freddy's 3 is the third game of the popular horror/survival game series.

Five Nights at Freddy's became an unexpected hit with the release of its first game in 2014. The series has since spawned over a dozen games as well as a slew of books, Let's Play YouTube videos, and more media. Five Nights at Freddy's 3 was released in 2015 and continues the popular series, although it makes several important alterations to its successful formula.

Story

This third installment of the Five Nights at Freddy's series had the most significant changes to date. It switches locations to Fazbear's Fright, a horror attraction that is constructed from parts of the restaurant which served as the setting for the past two games. Furthermore, only one mascot can kill you this time, although mascots from previous games can impede your progress and ability to survive.

Five Nights at Freddy's is known for delivering deep, intricate lore, and this game continues that tradition. It is actually set thirty years into the future, after the events of Freddy's 1 and 2.

Like phone calls from previous games, tape cassettes are used to provide additional details about the game's backstory. They also provide hints and information about additional rooms that can potentially be accessed in order to survive the nights. Like Five Nights at Freddy's 1 & 2, mini-games can be accessed that will provide players with additional information. Completing these mini-games are crucial in order to get the "good ending" of the game if players make it to the end.

Gameplay

Like the prior two games, your goal is survival. You must survive five nights at Fazbear's Fright, making it alive from 12:00am - 6:00am. Each round is roughly four minutes of real-time.

Survival means ensuring that Springtrap, an evil animatronic, doesn't kill you by entering your security office and delivering one of Five Night at Freddy's famous jumpscares. Unlike previous games, Five Nights at Freddy's has only one main enemy. This creates a different feeling than most Five Nights games and one that leaves players in even more discomfort.

In order to survive, you must monitor two security cameras and ensure that three different security systems are always working, rebooting them as necessary. If you have issues with the ventilation system, the player will blackout and hallucinate, with animatronics from the previous games hindering your progress and making it harder for you to successfully reboot the security systems and survive.

The graphics of this game are creepy and grainy, and like previous editions, Five Nights at Freddy's 3 successfully integrates a haunting visual style. The game makes perfect use of its every pixel in order to hide Springtrap and create an atmosphere that will absolutely terrify you when Springtrap inevitably reaches your office. The gameplay starts slow but becomes faster and faster. Indeed, it moves so slowly that you may not even realize how much trouble you are in until...too late.

Availability

The game first appeared on the iOS, Android, and Mac in 2015. In 2019, it was released on all major consoles. The current iOS price is $2.99.
